Vander has seen many platform transitions: PlayStation 2 to PlayStation 3; Wii motion controllers to Kinect motion-sensors; console to mobile. These changes seemed considerable, but in retrospect, they are incremental. By contrast, VR and MR are a series of exponential leaps: fast, unpredictable, and potentially life-changing. However, old game development assumptions prevent most studios from fully leveraging this tech. Time Machine VR, his first VR title, became one of Steam’s top 30 grossing VR games, out of over 1,000. Developing it was so challenging that it forced his studio to create new processes to fully take advantage of VR and MR’s immersive power. Using examples from their own titles - 4 launched and 4 in development on multiple platforms - this talk will show how a studio can evolve to succeed in this rapidly-shifting market.
Vander Caballero established himself as a leader in Canadian video game innovation as Design Director at EA. While there, he oversaw development on several major franchises. In 2010, he left EA to open Minority Media, with a new approach to game mechanics aiming to inspire empathy in players. Caballero first experimented with VR in 1998, with Daniel Langlois (Softimage), and with a VR ride for Montreal’s Oceania Project. In 2014, as VR began an unprecedented ascent, he started work on Minority’s first VR game, Time Machine VR. It soon ranked among Steam’s top 30 grossing VR titles, out of 1,000. Minority is now working on a series of VR and MR titles to be launched within the next couple of years.
