There's no way I was ever going to get The Three Doctors down to anything close to an hour, as it's quite a densely packed four-parter, but there were a few areas where the pace needed a little help. When I revisited my original version of 'The Three Doctors' with new VFX, which I only did last year, I realised the Blu-ray rip I'd used was terrible, only made worse by Hitfilm's poor rendering quality. This meant I had to re-do most of the composites for the Matrix version in Resolve.

'Carnival of Monsters'

I wasn't expecting to do many effects for Carnival, but, as usual, I was very wrong. The sequence where the TARDIS is picked up took me about two weeks alone to get both the animation, the angle and the lighting right in Blender. But there was no way I could live with the original shot! The original miniature of the TARDIS still makes a brief appearance later on though. That pesky moon in the background of the night scenes in part four was a nightmare too. There was also the challenge of getting consistency between the various shots of the Drashig models, many of which were shot on video and looked far worse than the shots on film. To try and tackle this I slowed the video footage down and recomposited them, while adding a 16mm film quality to the scenes.

'Frontier in Space'

The main challenge with model shots in Frontier, other than the sheer number of them, was getting the right balance with compositing the original models with new CG elements. There were some shots I just couldn't use, as they were unable to stabilise them sufficiently, but I also found an abundance of great model shots from the raw model footage found on the Blu-ray (such as the Master's stolen ship landing and taking off, and some great shots of it in flight that didn't get used for some bizarre reason. I also took the Dalek ship from 'Planet of the Daleks' and composited on a new shot where it lands on the Ogron planet, to draw more continuity between the two, quite tenuously-linked, stories.

'Planet of the Daleks'

When I originally added the Dalek gun effects to Planet, I intentionally made them a very pale blue, almost white, to distinguish them from later stories. But I'd already decided to add new sound effects (taken from 'Genesis of the Daleks', as I had with 'Day of the Daleks'), which makes them feel much more impactful, so I enhanced the original effects I'd done to make them more blue, along with a couple of additional shots. The episode lengths ended up surprisingly long, considering the amount of material I cut out, but this is perhaps because the six episodes are rare in that they barely have any overlapping recaps at the beginning of each episode (if at all).

'The Green Death'

Thankfully, the omnibus edition exists, which meant that this was a relatively easy edit. But I did try to improve some of the fairly poor CSO video shots from parts 5 and 6, which stood out like a sore thumb from the surrounding location footage, again using the same technique I used in Carnival to make them look a bit more like 16mm.
