Islamabad police unit patrols city streets on bikes

In Islamabad, men and women in the police can be seen cycling through the streets of the city.  
They are part of a new mobile police unit, whose members patrol the city on bicycles.   

STORY-LINE:
As a woman, 22-year-old police constable Afsar Jahan takes pride in cycling through the streets of Islamabad to do her job.
She is part of a new mobile police unit, whose members patrol the city on bicycles.  
The unit features women to help shake off gender barriers, particularly restrictions on women in a male-dominated society.
"There is no difference between men and women... I am not feeling any shame about riding a bicycle," says Jahan.
Jahan joined the police force in 2018 and recently moved to the cycling unit, which was launched as Pakistan was facing its third wave of COVID-19 infections.
Members of this unit patrol the city and guide communities, talking to people in markets, parks and streets.
They give out information on COVID-19, hand out masks and tell people to follow the preventive measures.
"Seeing policemen and women on bikes within the communities - I think the response has been marvelous," says the inspector-general of the Islamabad police, Qazi Jamil-ur-Rehman.
He added that he is considering expanding the idea to include a larger part of the city.
Apart from working with the community and enforcing laws, this police unit is hoping to encourage ordinary people to cycle more.
