Ask the Allergist: What is food insecurity?

Описание: Food insecurity is defined as not having enough food or the right kinds of food to eat. This is caused by not having enough money or not being able to get to a grocery store.

People with food allergies, Celiac disease and other chronic diseases are at risk for food insecurity. This is because they may need special foods (dairy-free, gluten-free, etc.) for their diet. Sometimes it can be a challenge to find these special foods.

Most people with food allergies tend to spend more for groceries than those without food allergies. This is because allergy-friendly foods are often classified as specialty items and may cost more than similar foods.

The good news is, there is an increasing availability of allergy-friendly foods as the market grows to serve this population with special dietary needs.
