The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps officially declared a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz immediately following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
A senior IRGC official warned on Monday that any vessel attempting to transit the waterway would be targeted.
Iran has also designated regional oil pipelines as potential targets, aiming to paralyze roughly 20% of the global daily oil flow.
This aggressive move is seen as a strategic retaliatory move to leverage Tehran's "control" over the world’s most critical energy corridor.

The impact on South Korea is expected to be significant, as the country relies on the Middle East for 70% of its crude oil and 20% of its LNG imports.
In Japan, concerns are mounting over potential stagflation, which is a period of simultaneous high inflation and economic stagnation, should the blockade persist. While some analysts suggest a total blockade might only last a few days, the immediate stranding of hundreds of ships is already destabilizing global markets.

Meanwhile, the escalating conflict has pushed U.S. retail gasoline prices above $3 per gallon for the first time since last November.
According to Reuters, this price surge serves as a critical test of public support for President Trump’s military actions against Iran.

The Wall Street Journal noted that Trump is taking a significant political gamble ahead of the November midterm elections, as historically, high energy costs have severely damaged the approval ratings of previous administrations.
