Military life is gratifying and fulfilling, but it is also full of challenges - from deployments to family separations, and frequent moves. Around 600,000 active-duty and transitioning military families move to new communities each year. Most of these moves are into local communities where it can be hard to make connections. Not to mention, these moves translate to military kids changing schools six to nine times on average.
Uprooting frequently has its impacts. Our research shows that most military and Veteran families do not feel a strong sense of belonging to their local communities. This matters because we know when families DO feel a sense of belonging, everything else improves - financial security, mental health and wellness, resilience, and even military retention. Together, we can make a difference for the men and women who serve, Veterans, and their families, simply through participating in Blue Star Welcome Week, happening September 24th - October 2rd, 2021!
