This video introduces Waterhousea floribunda.
Waterhousea floribunda is commonly known as the Weeping Lilly Pilly. It occurs naturally in rainforests in NSW and Queensland where it will grow into a large canopied trees. However it is most commonly used as a screening plant in residential and commercial landscapes.
The Weeping Lilly Pilly can be grown as standard plant, or pleached, or can be left to grow into its natural form, where it can reach up to 15 metres tall. Its long slender leaves with crinkly margins hang gracefully to form a wall of lush decorative foliage.
As you can see the new growth is a soft pinky-bronze colour which contrasts beautifully with its lime green mature leaves. Fluffy white flowers appear in summer and turn into fleshy white berries.
The leaves are prone to attack by psyllids, which is a pest that causes pimply bumps on the leaf surface and new growth to become distorted. To treat this, simply prune off affected foliage and discard in green waste bins.
To achieve a full, dense hedge, trim back a few times to encourage new growth. The new growth is susceptible to frost burn so avoid pruning in the colder months.
Waterhousea floribunda will grow in part shade to full sun, and can tolerate wet soils. In hot periods, extra watering will be required to keep the plant healthy and lush. It is better protected away from hot winds that will draw water from the plants foliage.
Plantmark have a varieties of sizes available from smaller 20cm pots through to large established specimens which are great for instant impact.
