Step back into the roaring heart of 1920s Chicago with “Alexander, Where’s That Band?” — a spirited, high-energy recording by the Pickett-Parham Apollo Syncopators. Cut in December 1926 and released on Paramount 12441, this track captures the essence of the city’s jazz-fueled nightlife and the rambunctious joy of the dance hall era.
Led by Leroy Pickett (violin) and Tiny Parham (piano), the group assembled some of Chicago’s finest talents: B.T. Wingfield on cornet, Charlie Lawson on trombone, Junie Cobb blazing across clarinet, alto, and soprano sax, and Jimmy Bertrand hammering out the beat on drums. Together, they deliver a raucous blend of syncopation, melodic punch, and unrestrained exuberance.
This wasn’t genteel parlor music — this was stompin’, jumpin’, shoutin’ jazz built for crowded ballrooms and back-alley speakeasies. Every bar shouts with urgency, as if the band was playing like “the rent was due at midnight.”
Remastered from an original shellac 78rpm disc (Matrix 4053-1), this upload brings their joyful noise to new ears — from Bondi to Berlin. Let the horns roar and the rhythm fly. Alexander’s band is back. 🎺🎻🕺💃
