When recording drums, microphone choice isn’t about chasing a sound—it’s about control and intention.
For this session, we used the ADK T-FET Series to build a complete drum sound by choosing microphones based on how they respond to transients, manage high SPL, and shape space at the source.
All T-FET microphones share a common design philosophy:
• Tri-Polar patterns to control bleed and focus
• Up to an 16 dB pad for aggressive sources like kick, snare, and toms
• High-pass filters to manage proximity and low-frequency buildup
• A special soft-saturation circuit that subtly rounds transients and adds harmonic density without sounding compressed or distorted
Here’s how that played out on the kit:
Kick Drum — Frankfurt-49 TUsed for its ability to deliver weight and punch without exaggerated attack. The pad and saturation circuit allow the kick to hit hard while staying controlled and natural.
Snare Drum — Hamburg-67 TFast, focused, and articulate. The midrange stays honest, while the saturation circuit adds body to the transient—making the snare sit easily without aggressive EQ.
Floor Tom — Berlin-47 TBuilt to handle low-frequency energy with authority. Even under heavy hits, the 47 T remains composed and clear, with no loss of definition, and the classic “47” tone profile.
Overheads — Vienna-12 TSmooth, open, and balanced. Cymbals stay detailed without hype, and the stereo image feels natural and unforced.
Room — Munich-7 T
This is where the kit comes together. The Munich-7 T captures depth, energy, and adds cohesion and size without smearing.
The goal wasn’t to make the drums sound larger than life—but to capture what was actually happening in the room, with tools that give you flexibility, character, and musical control at the source.
