This very rare archival recording from 1945 captures the legendary Soviet cellist Daniil Shafran at the age of 22, performing the hauntingly beautiful Sicilienne by Maria Theresia von Paradis, in an arrangement by G. Pekker. He is accompanied at the piano by Nina Musinyan, his first wife and frequent musical partner during his early career.
This interpretation, recorded in Moscow shortly after World War II, is filled with poise, purity, and poetic depth—hallmarks of Shafran’s inimitable style. A poignant and historically significant document of one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century.

📚 Historical Note
Though often attributed to Maria Theresia von Paradis (1759–1824), a blind pianist and composer of the Classical era, the Sicilienne is believed by some scholars to be a later fabrication or arrangement, possibly from the early 20th century. Regardless of its origin, the piece remains beloved for its graceful melody, gentle rhythm, and emotional intimacy.
In this 1945 performance, Daniil Shafran, already a remarkable cellist in his early twenties, imbues the work with a deeply lyrical and heartfelt character. His sound—rich, singing, and sensitive—makes this interpretation a true gem from the early days of Soviet recording history.
