This is a remixed version of my instrumental cover of Talk Talk's 1984 smash hit 'Such a Shame', from their album 'It's My Life' (© EMI Records / Island Music Ltd.) The song was written by the band's late vocalist, Mark Hollis.
A special shoutout goes to YouTube user and bass player Joris Muselaers (@jorismuselaers8218) whose video 'Such a Shame Fretless Bass Cover' ( • Talk Talk - Such a Shame fretless bass cover ) really helped me decipher some of Paul Webb's more intricate bass lines on this fantastic Talk Talk song. That said, his playing does 'Such a Shame' much more justice than my beginner style does!
My version was sequenced and recorded with a Faderport 16 controller and Presonus' Studio One 6 Professional DAW, using the following instruments:
Korg KRONOS (piano, DX7 flute, drums and percussion)
Roland JUPITER-X (most synths - including the 'elephant' sound on the intro - and a little percussion)
Arturia MELLOTRON V sampled into Arturia EMULATOR II V (resonant synth at the end of the choruses),
Arturia EMULATOR II V (marcato strings riser at the end of the choruses),
Arturia PROPHET V (synth brass at the end),
Takamine EG340SC ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC GUITAR,
gear4music Chicago bass guitar converted to FRETLESS,
a short, edited shaker loop from JJ Jeczalik's 'Art of Sampling' sample CD.
The following Arturia effects from their 'FX Collection 3' were used:
REV INTENSITY reverb,
REV LX-24 reverb (room & hall)
JUN-60 chorus,
DIST OPAMP-21 distortion,
FILTER MINI MiniMoog filter,
DELAY TAPE-201,
COMP VCA-65 on the mixbus (glue compressor),
DIST TUBE-CULTURE on bass and on the mixbus (for saturation)
UAD LA-2A compressor on various tracks
Studio One's stock PRO EQ 3, LIMITER 2, BEAT DELAY and BINAURAL PAN were also used, as well as YouLean's free LOUDNESS METER 2.
