The Château de Barberey-Saint-Sulpice is a 16th-century residence, remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries, located in the French commune of Barberey-Saint-Sulpice in the Aube department, in the Grand Est region.
The château is fully protected as a Monument Historique.
Location
The château stands on the banks of the Seine in the commune of Barberey-Saint-Sulpice, in the French department of Aube.
History
Originally known as a feudal motte held by the Lords of Barberey, the property later belonged to several noble families, including the Valéry—one of whom was a Marshal of Champagne—the Plessis-Saint-Jean, the Choiseul-Praslin, the Mairat, and finally the Roy de Vaucelles family. The site was also occupied by a large Merovingian necropolis. An initial reconstruction was undertaken but left unfinished; the current outbuildings bear witness to this phase.
The château was completely remodeled from 1626 onward in the Louis XIII style by Jean Le Mairat, a bourgeois from Troyes who was later ennobled, replacing a fortified house that had belonged in the 16th century to the Choiseul-Praslin family. Although in poor condition, this earlier structure survived until the 18th century.
The château had its own chapel dedicated to Our Lady (Notre-Dame), under the sole authority of the bishop, and is known to have existed from the 16th century onward. The property was sold as national property to Mr. Petit-Buot, then passed into the hands of Baron de Valsuzenay, Prefect of Aube. It remained in that family before being sold to Mr. Mony, Mayor of Troyes.
The estate included a mill, known as early as 1397 through a lease granted to Perrin de Bouzanton, a pauleleur in Troyes. In the early 16th century it was used for paper production by the Le Bé family, then by Edmond Denise at the beginning of the 17th century, and later by his widow, Charlotte Le Tartier. The mill was demolished on October 1, 1913, after having been used for electricity generation.
Description
The section facing the moats preserves elements of fortifications dating from the 16th century, which attest to the previous château attributed to the Choiseul family, owners of the property until 1596.
