Health care workers have spent the last year in the headlines due to their essential role in fighting the coronavirus pandemic, but less attention has been paid to the high numbers of work-related injuries these employees face on a regular basis. There are over 18 million health care workers in the United States, and they face some of the highest rates of injury of workers in any industry and face risks driven by ergonomic factors, high exertion, constant stress, and even violence by patients or non-employees.
In a special episode of the DORN Injury Prevention Academy Podcast recorded in the summer of 2020, we spoke with Paul Power, Assistant VP of Workforce Safety at Northwell Health, who is tasked with the safety of 72,000 employees in New York state's largest health care system.
Paul joined the show to talk about the types of injuries suffered by health care workers and explain how his organization handles the enormous task of protecting employees whose jobs revolve around caring for others.
We cover:
How stress and other changes from the pandemic resulted in new safety risks
How Northwell Health went from cut their annual injury expenses from $5 million down to just $500,000
Lessons organizations and businesses outside of health care can take from how Northwell manages safety and injury prevention
