Members of the Maryland Conservation Corps worked over the past year to install a new eel ladder at Daniels Dam in Patapsco Valley State Park in Maryland. This structure serves as a "conveyor belt" of sorts for the eels, allowing the long and slippery fish to access a huge stretch of habitat upriver from the dam.
A feasibility study is currently underway on removing Daniels Dam, and in the meantime this eel ladder represents a quick solution to help more eels. It only cost about $600 and took a day to install, with equipment purchased from a hardware store.
