The iconic California Flag breaks all the flag design rules, yet it is one of the most popular state flags in the United States. This history of how the "Bear Flag" came to be involves, misspellings, coups, diapers, and other fascinating stories. In this video, I traveled to Sonoma, California to see the site of the Bear Flag Revolt, and San Francisco to see how popular this flag really is.
**Correction/Clarification - When Don Kelly made the specifications for the design of the flag in 1953, he based the bear on Nahl's watercolor from 1855, but then checked his design against Monarch at the California Academy of Sciences, where he worked at the time. So Nahl did not base his watercolor off of Monarch, Kelly used both the Watercolor and Monarch as references. **
Thanks Ted Kaye for that clarification!
The last surviving Alvarado Flag is at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. https://www.geneautry.com/museum/
Another special thanks to Bill Trinkle from the Bear Flag Museum for some images and for scouting all the spots in San Francisco to film.
