The exhibition "Lost and Found in Hong Kong : The Unsung Chinese Heroes at D-Day", held at the Exchange, Strand Campus of King's College London (KCL) between 16 July and 3 September 2025, is about an accidental discovery in 2015 of a diary in a soon-to-be demolished residential building in Hong Kong. The diary belonged to LAM Ping-yu, who was amongst a group of 24 officers sent to Britain for training during World War II. The journey to London took the party four months through war-torn regions before they reached the Royal Naval College at Greenwich, London in October 1943. As their first mission in Europe, they took part in the D-Day Landings in June 1944 and Operation Dragoon in August the same year for the liberation of Southern France.
Mr LAM’s diary appears to be the only known primary source on Chinese involvement in D-Day. It reveals numerous first-hand stories about the realities of war, countless depictions of excitement, frustration, envy, and even romance! In the following year, Mr LAM took part in Operation Armour, an operation drawn up by the British government to alleviate the dire situation of Hong Kong following Japanese occupation. His writings offer a glimpse into the city’s post-war recovery.
After the war, Mr LAM settled in Hong Kong and joined Wah Kwong Shipping Company as a sea captain of a merchant vessel. In the 1960s, he married a Japanese wife, with whom he had two children. In the early 1970s, having spent two decades in Hong Kong, he decided to emigrate with his family, first to Italy, then to Brazil, and finally to the United States in the late 1990s to spend his remaining years there.
The curator of the exhibition also attempted to trace Mr LAM's contemporaries, i.e. the other 23 officers sent to Britain and a group of 49 officers sent to the United States at around the same time, and their families with varying degrees of success. You may also find their stories at the exhibition.
