Released Palestinian prisoners recount torture and abuse in Israeli detention centres, with many showing signs of distress and medical neglect.
In an interview with Middle East Eye, one former prisoner describes being detained while attempting to reach a safe zone in Rafah in January 2024. Ahmed Khreis recalls conditions in Israeli prisons as “torture without mercy”, stating that interrogators would bring severed limbs to instil fear in detainees. He says he witnessed prisoners die from torture.
Khreis also describes how prisoners “never saw the sun” and endured mistreatment until the very moment of their release.
“They had the air conditioning blasting on us in the bus. We were freezing, shivering, unable to bear it at all. There were no toilets, no food, no water - nothing but hunger.”
