The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a band of dense connective tissue which courses from the femur to the tibia. The ACL is a key structure in the knee joint, as it resists anterior tibial translation and rotational loads. Arises from the posteromedial corner of medial aspect of lateral femoral condyle in the intercondylar notch.
Internal Brace is a recent advancement in the Ligament surgery in which a Fibertape(A UHMWPE tape which is very strong) is used to supplement repair or reconstruction of the ligament. The Internal Brace acts in a seat belt manner to prevent injury to the ligament . The role of Internal Brace is evolving in the ACL surgery. Its more important when we are doing ACL Repairs although it is also useful with ACL reconstruction as well.
