The Nilgiri Mountain Railway continues to stand as one of India’s most remarkable hill railways and an enduring example of engineering excellence. Opened in phases beginning in 1899, the railway connects Mettupalayam with Udagamandalam across a scenic 46-km mountainous route. The line features 16 tunnels, 257 bridges and 209 curves, and is India’s only rack-and-pinion railway system as well as the steepest rail line in Asia. Special X-Class steam locomotives haul trains between Mettupalayam and Coonoor. Recognised for its heritage value, the railway was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005 as part of the Mountain Railways of India.
