The Cirdan Trust manage Duet amongst other ships which are used primarily to help disadvantaged youths find hope and success through sailing challenges. Duet specifically, now in her 110th year, is also used for Duke of Edinburgh exercises.

Duet was launched in 1912 as Gaviotta but was bought in the early 1930s by explorer Augustine Courthault, who renamed her Duet. After he died ownership passed down to his son Reverend Christopher Courthauld who then formed the Ocean Youth Club.

Ownership has now been passed down to younger members of the Courthauld Family who continue to operate her for sail training for young people under the management of The Cirdan Trust.

The Cirdan Trust, founded in 1983 to serve young people, have a fleet of three ships which allows them to cater for all kinds of groups and charters. The three boats they operate are Duet, Faramir and Queen Galadrial.

Video Production & School Use

This video, one of three, was commisioned by author and sailing enthusiast Julia Jones to accompany talks in schools encouraging and inspiring children and schools to get into sailing. Very little resources or direction was available for this production which meant simply shooting and collecting what was available and then developing an 'idea' from there.

After shooting the footage was analysed and I decided to split into three focus points: 1. an introduction to Cirdan and what they do for young people, and in particular with Duet 2. Show how a challenging situation can develop confidence (using my son's experience on the day as an example) and 3. the anniversary - preparing to sail.

All of these I envisaged could be useful talking points.

Unfortunately I didn't have access on board when sailing nor able to obtain any interviews but Lyndsey at The Cirdan Trust gave me some excellent photos and sailing video footage to use.

Hopefully it works enough to get schoolchildren talking, give Cirdan Trust some exposure and that the Courtauld Family have a keepsake of this eventful day.
