Milking Goats in the Village
In a shady, clean corner of a thatched barn or cobblestone courtyard, a village man or woman sits on a low stool, milking a quiet, black-and-white goat. The goat, with its glossy hair and full udders, stands on a short wooden platform, its head bent toward the grain bowl in front of it, motionless.
The milker’s deft, quick hands, with a quick, sure rhythm, milk the warm, frothy milk directly into a clay jug or metal bucket. The sound of the milk sloshing, along with the sound of the goat chewing grain and perhaps the buzz of a mosquito in the hot midday air, fills the intimate atmosphere of the work.
Light streams in through a small window or hatch, illuminating columns of dust in the air and glistening on the goat’s back and the clay pot. A few curious and playful kids look at the scene with wide eyes on the wooden fence to the side. The scene is a symbol of the small scale, intimacy and productivity of rural life, where every drop of milk is the result of daily care and closeness to domestic animals.
