This Classical Music Appreciation Pill is about a true gem of the Italian sacred music repertoire: the "Stabat Mater" was the last composition written by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736) in the 26th and last year of his life.
We are going to listen and analyze its beginning, a stunningly beautiful expression of Virgin Mary's grief, portrayed exceptionally by Pergolesi with a tender, but heart-tearing usage of dissonance, one of the apex points in the whole history of Italian baroque music, in particular in the sacred field.
