When Karen Lewis became president of the Chicago Teachers Union, she redefined what a union could be: a force not just for better schools, but for a better city.

From 2012 to 2019, through strikes, negotiations, and organizing, CTU’s 30,000+ educators turned their contracts into tools for justice — demanding not only fair pay, but safe, welcoming, and thriving neighborhoods.

Now, under the leadership of my sister, Stacy Davis Gates — a history teacher whose own school was shut down in 2010 — that legacy continues. And yes, they’ve changed the city. They even helped elect one of their own as mayor: Mayor Brandon Jonhson.
