Foundations of Machine Learning for Physicists (MagNetUS tutorial online seminar)

Описание: We invite you to join us for the first in an approximately monthly series of online tutorial seminars on topics of interest to the basic plasma science community. These presentations are intended to be understandable (and hopefully useful) for everyone from senior undergraduates to experienced researchers. Our first talk will be from Dr. Nat Mathews (they/them) on foundations of machine learning.

Title: Foundations of Machine Learning for Physicists
Abstract: Machine Learning (ML) is increasingly common throughout every field of science, but it can be difficult to break into. Differentiating high-quality ML work from its opposite requires a degree of expertise that can be hard to obtain just from reading ML conference proceedings, and collaborating efficiently with experts requires familiarity with the vocabulary and common tools. We will explore the fundamentals of ML through discussion and example, building the core toolset necessary to work with ML researchers and discern how ML could help answer your science questions. Through demonstrations using torch for python with keras, we will investigate the actual implementation and behaviors of some common architectures, learning how to put the pieces together to build and train neural networks and include physics information.
