The station was hushed, bathed in soft light and shadows. A late train hummed somewhere in the distance, but here, all was still. I sat alone on the bench, hands in my coat pockets, watching the tracks disappear into darkness.

Then she arrived.

She stepped into the moonlight like it had been waiting just for her. Slow, unbothered steps. A book in one hand, earphones in her ears, her gaze turned slightly downward. She moved with a kind of quiet grace, like she wasn’t walking through a subway station—but a dream.

She didn’t see me.
She never did.

She sat across from me, beneath one of the old lamps. Her hair caught the light. She opened her book, pressed play on whatever song she was listening to, and disappeared into her own quiet world.

My train arrived.

It stopped, exhaled, waited. I didn’t move.

I sat there, watching her. Every second seemed slower near her, as if time itself didn’t want to rush her. Then the train sighed again and left without me. And once more, I could see her—still there, still reading, still untouched by the noise of the world.

A few minutes passed. Then her train came.

She stood, calmly, tucked her book into her coat. As the doors opened, she turned—just slightly—and looked at me. A glance. Brief. Soft. And then she stepped inside.

The train disappeared down the tunnel. The station grew still again.

I sat there a moment longer, quietly full.

Then I stood, smiling to myself, and walked out beneath the city’s sleeping lights.

I don’t even know her name.
But I come here every night—
