Certainly! In Windows 11, the hosts file plays a crucial role in mapping domain names to IP addresses. You can use it to block access to specific websites or point a domain name to a particular IP address. Let’s walk through the steps to edit the hosts file:
Backup the Hosts File: Before making any changes, create a backup of the hosts file. This way, you can easily restore it if needed. Here’s how:
Launch File Explorer on your PC.
Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc (if your Windows is installed on another drive, adjust the drive letter accordingly).
Locate the file named “hosts” in this folder.
Copy the hosts file and save it in another location as a backup.
Edit Hosts File Using Notepad:
Open Notepad as an administrator:
Search for “Notepad” in the Start menu.
Right-click on the Notepad app icon and select “Run as administrator”.
Click “Yes” when prompted by the permission dialog.
In Notepad, go to the “File” menu and select “Open”:
Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + O.
Paste the following path into the “File name” field in the Open dialog box: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
Press Enter.
The hosts file will open in Notepad. You can now edit it:
Add new IP addresses and domain names at the end of the file.
Save your changes using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + S.
Remember that editing the hosts file allows you to trick your computer into resolving specific domain names to desired IP addresses. Whether you’re working with domain-name-independent software.
