Still on crutches from a leg injury, I took a day bus from Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai and arrived late afternoon — straight into the middle of Songkran.
No tourists, no plan, and as far as I could tell… I was the only foreigner in town. Within minutes I was soaked, covered in powder, and navigating Thailand’s wild New Year water fights on crutches, completely unprepared but all in.
It’s messy, loud, chaotic, and incredibly welcoming — the kind of celebration you stumble into when you leave the usual routes and just keep walking (carefully).
From long bus rides to getting ambushed in the streets of Hat Yai, this is what travel looks like when you say yes — even injured.
