Background:
The Tatmadaw, which has usurped the democratically-elected National League for Democracy in a violent coup d’état in February 2021, has expanded its reign of terror by routinely targeted Chin Christian houses of worship for shelling, arson, and occupation. Additionally, junta troops have arbitrarily detained, physically abused, and even killed Christian leaders. The tremendous violence that the Tatmadaw has unleashed, not just towards Chin Christians but towards peaceful democratic protesters and innocent civilians, draws terrifying parallels to the Tatmadaw’s previous violent campaign of crimes against humanity they committed against the predominantly Muslim Rohingya ethnic group in 2017. As recently as late March 2022, United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken officially declared that the Tatmadaw’s violence against the Rohingya amounted to genocide; now, Myanmar’s ethnic and religious minority groups alike are justified in their concerns that that same militant group that waged such atrocities as recently as 2017 have now taken over the entire nation.
Meanwhile, the Tatmadaw has engaged in numerous violent confrontations with armed ethnic and resistance groups, which have caused thousands of civilian casualties and which have exacerbated the broader humanitarian crisis by displacing hundreds of thousands of civilians either internally in other regions of Myanmar, or in adjacent countries such as Bangladesh, where their existence is precarious and they face constant threats of repatriation to their war-torn home country.
This Human Rights Council parallel event, presented by Jubilee Campaign and the Chin Association of Maryland, will provide an overview of the direct and indirect persecution of and attacks upon the predominantly Christian Chin ethnic minority group in Chin State and the Sagaing Region of Myanmar.
