Legislation on abortion is moving forward in the South Carolina State House, focused on regulating abortion pills.
On Wednesday afternoon, members of the House Constitutional Law Subcommittee heard public comment about two separate bills that seek to expand abortion restrictions.
A new two-hour-long constitutional law subcommittee meeting focused on two separate abortion-centered bills on Wednesday.
H. 4760 is titled Abortion-Inducing Drugs and seeks to add regulations to two drugs - mifepristone and misoprostol, pills that can be used to terminate a pregnancy but can also be used to treat medical syndromes and treat a late miscarriage.
The bill would also create felony penalties for using the drugs for an abortion, including after the 6-week heartbeat timeline.
House Bill 3537, titled Parental Equal Protection Act, was also discussed and would create protections from the moment of conception.
This means that any attempt to terminate a pregnancy after the moment of conception would be illegal in South Carolina and carry felony penalties.
The abortion pill bill passed through the subcommittee with two 'no' votes coming from Bamberg representative Justin Bamberg, D-Bamberg, and Representative Elizabeth Wetmore, D-Charleston.
The subcommittee ran out of time before taking a vote on the Equal Protection Bill.
Although H.4760 made it through the subcommittee, it still needs to be approved by the full Judiciary Committee and then the House and Senate.
