Guqin (pronounced goo-chin) is a traditional seven-stringed plucked instrument from China, with over 3,000 years of history.
It is often referred to as the "Instrument of the Sages" due to its association with Chinese scholars, philosophers, and literati. The guqin is not only a musical instrument but also a symbol of Chinese intellectual and cultural refinement, representing harmony, balance, and introspection in traditional Chinese aesthetics. Known for its delicate, ethereal sound and profound cultural symbolism, the guqin was recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2003.
Here, I have collected ten famous guqin pieces. They are performed by renowned guqin masters and represent the finest versions I could gather.
Among them, I highly recommend the first piece, "Guangling San". This piece carries a legendary aura, telling the story of an ancient assassin seeking revenge for his father. It has long been cherished by scholars and intellectuals of ancient China who valued solitude and transcendence.
At one point, "Guangling San" was lost to history. The version we have today is a modern interpretation based on an ancient musical score.
