Queen Elizabeth II welcomed French President Jacques Chirac on a four-day state visit to Britain on Tuesday (14/5), escorting him in a horse-drawn carriage to Buckingham Palace. Chirac and his wife, Bernadette, arrived from Paris aboard a
scheduled Eurostar train, the first such visit in history via the Channel Tunnel, and were greeted at Waterloo Station by Princess Margaret, sister of the Queen. The Queen escorted the French President in a royal carriage drawn
by four horses, along the one-and-a-half kilometres from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace. Madame Chirac and the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen's husband,
followed in the second carriage, with Princess Margaret and French Foreign Minister Herve de Charette in a third.
