For my big beefy cacti, I use the cacti soil mix with pumice stone. Smaller cacti or smaller succulents, I use the soil mix/perlite or soil mix/ bonsai mix gravel combo.
The key to it, is having a well draining mix. It reduces the chance of rotting.
