Australia operated exactly ten AN/AVQ-26 Pave Tack pods—and for twenty-six years, they were the RAAF's only laser-guided bombing system. While American F-111Fs carried Pave Tack into Desert Storm, Australia faced a unique challenge: integrating 1980s digital targeting technology into 1960s analogue aircraft that weren't designed to speak the same language. Flight Lieutenants Tim Jones and Greg Fitzgerald proved it could work on October 1st, 1984, in the first Pave Tack-equipped F-111C flight. From that day until December 2010, those ten pods provided thermal imaging, laser designation, and surgical strike capability that transformed Australian doctrine from attrition bombing to precision warfare. This is the story of the targeting system that Australia never replaced—because ten pods were all it ever had.
