Italy has been placed in lockdown after the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases doubled overnight and its death toll rose to 366.
The unprecedented restrictions have closed off entire regions and contained 16 million residents as schools, pools, gyms and museums were forced to shut until April 3.
Gatherings in the Vatican’s St Peter’s Square have been halted with the pope giving his public blessings via video.
The number of cases of the virus world-wide has passed 100,000 with more than 3,500 fatalities.
