Lord of the Springs-37mi (XC race) 2024

As part of the Michigan Gravel Race Series (MGRS), this is one of two unique races where a MTB is the better choice over a gravel bike. The race starts off with 5 miles of gravel then into singletrack for 5 miles. After about 18 miles of gravel, you're back for 3 miles more miles of singletrack. Finally it finishes with 5 miles of gravel. This race took place on September 7, 2024, in Middleville, Michigan.

I haven't done many XC races this year as my focus has been gravel. This race doesn't suite me but I gave it my best shot. I made it through the first nasty hill before the singletrack in decent position, but it took some all time power PR efforts. By the time I reached the trail I was smoked and couldn't close the gap to the next group. Eventually I started to get passed by riders and to make matters worse I later had a pedal strike on an uphill rooty section that sent me OTB. Luckily I was able to quickly recover and stay with the group that passed me.

Although I mostly survived my crash, my right wrist hurt pretty bad and my left thigh felt like it had a bruise. My bike was a bit banged up as well as the crash loosened my rear suspension pivot causing my rear wheel to wobble horribly every time I put down power. That's 2 years on a row I crashed at this race, both of which were self inflicted. Nonetheless, I was able to stay with a good group of guys for the remainder of the race and had enough left to manage a sprint.
