Security tension heightened in Abuja on Monday morning as operatives of the Nigeria Police Force blocked all major access roads leading to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Secretariat, ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanu protest.
The blockade, which began in the early hours of the day, affected major routes including the Area 1–Garki axis, Secretariat junction, and the Federal Secretariat complex, leaving commuters stranded and causing heavy gridlock across adjoining roads.
Witnesses said several armed policemen and personnel of other security agencies were stationed strategically around the Secretariat, the Eagle Square, and the Three Arms Zone, preventing movement towards the Aso Rock Villa where protesters had planned to march.
The development comes amid the online and offline mobilization by supporters of the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who had announced nationwide and international demonstrations demanding his unconditional release.
Many civil servants and passersby were reportedly subjected to security checks, while others were turned back as security operatives enforced tight control in the area.
A senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the blockade was a “preventive measure” to maintain peace and avert a possible breakdown of law and order.
We received intelligence of a planned mass action today. The police have taken steps to ensure that no group disrupts public peace or endangers lives and property within the capital,” the officer stated.
Meanwhile, leaders of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow movement have condemned the action, describing it as an “unconstitutional attempt to suppress citizens’ right to peaceful protest.”
As of press time, movement around the Secretariat, Eagle Square, and surrounding government offices remained restricted, with heavy police presence maintaining surveillance to forestall any unrest.
