"Arundhati Roy and Beyond: Persistent Suppression of Freedom of Thought in India" explores ongoing challenges to freedom in a nation the Indian state claims to be the world's largest democracy. Sparked by Arundhati Roy's recent indictment for terrorism by the Modi government, the latest episode in a long-running campaign to suppress dissent, this timely discussion features Dr Mayur Suresh, expert on terrorism trials and authoritarian law; Dr Adrija Dey, researcher on gender-based violence and political activist; and Safoora Zargar, student leader and former political prisoner. We will examine the global rise of surveillance, authoritarianism, and criminalisation of democratic dissent, focusing on India. Join us for a critical conversation on international solidarity and the struggle for freedom in an increasingly restrictive world.

His book Terror Trials: Life and Law in Delhi's Courts (Fordham University Press, 2023) is derived from his ethnographic fieldwork on terrorism cases in Delhi’s trial courts. In 2023, he was awarded the Leverhulme Research Leadership Award for a project titled The Social Life of Law in Authoritarian India. With this award, he will build a research team to do ethnographic and quantitative research into the Indian state's use of law to reconstitute society.
