This episode of "Open Line" sheds light on the water access disparities that plagued the rural portions of our state in 1980. The host, Tom Fowler, speaks with Reverend I. DeQuincey Newman, Director of Rural Development, and G. Robert Cook, Grants Coordinator for the Division of Rural Development. The program examines the challenges posed by the widespread lack of running water, which has become a significant obstacle to the health and safety of over half a million South Carolinians.
The program continues with a segment of The Greatest Barrier, another SCETV broadcast, which depicts the tedious and out-of-date water collection process in many rural areas. Additionally, Governor Riley provides a sobering reality of the severity of the many counties’ inability to access clean and safe running water. The health and safety hazards associated with poor water quality affected all facets of life, ranging from personal hygiene to clothing cleanliness. Live accounts from residents who spoke with Reverend I. DeQuincey Newman reveal the hardships of pumping and transporting water every day for basic needs.
After the segment finishes, G. Robert Cook notes the extent of states without running water and discusses details about funding and the provision of grants for communities.
