Macao Beach sits between Bavaro Beach and Uvero Alto on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic. The name "Macao" is believed to come from the indigenous Taíno people and may describe a type of bird in their language. For centuries, this was a working beach — local fishermen launching wooden boats each morning, families gathering on weekends to enjoy the sun and the fresh catch of the day. That authenticity is still very much alive.

Our favorite spot for fresh seafood? La Doña — tucked at the far end of the beach closest to the cliff. When the fishing boats come in, they cook what was just caught. It doesn't get fresher than that.
