Sounds of the Australian outback at night

It's been a hot and windy day in the Australian desert. The few hardy animals that call this place home have been sheltering from the heat since early morning. The outback is as vast as it is empty, and its soundscape is very sparse. Wind in the dry vegetation is the most common sound you can hear around here. It seems like all the wildlife sounds you would expect in such a remote wilderness are not there, even when you do see the something scurrying away in the bush.

At night there's a little more than just wind though. Crickets and other insects start calling as soon as the heat subsides. Their shrill chorus pierces the night and carries for long distances as they stridulate away. These insects have limited amounts of energy, so after about an hour they feel like they've played their part. For a brief moment, a distant frogmouth joins the insects with its low frequency sounds, but it gives up fairly quickly. The landscape becomes quieter and the wind is the only element of this barren soundscape once again.
