Post Derailment Response by Hulcher Services, Inc. and BNSF along track 7910. The minor event involved a V-SD (Vehicle Series, San Diego point of origin) train and GTW 504244 (w/ Canadian National logos), SOO 516384, CTTX 692224, and TTGX 964900 (w/ Conrail logos). The response occurred along Tidelands Avenue between Civic Center Drive and W 19th Street, within proximity of the Unified Port of San Diego, National City Marine Terminal, California on Friday November 15th, 2024.
No injuries reported.
Time and cargo-sensitive safe re-railing of the consist was of utmost importance because it could have otherwise negatively impacted operations for a number of freight trains that operate (typically at night) including (but not limited to):
Daily southbound V (vehicle series) train.
Daily northbound V (vehicle series) train (over 400,000 new automobiles transported by this specific train each year).
Daily southbound M (manifest series) train (lumber, steel, refrigerated produce and perishables, paint solvents, chemicals, cement, fertilizer, plastic pellets, fuel, and numerous other types of bulk commodities).
Daily northbound M (manifest series) train.
Daily L (local series) train between San Diego and National City servicing the pier-side tracks along the Tenth Street Terminal, tracks along the cold storage facility, General Dynamics NASSCO, Chevron, Calportland, Reliance, transload customers situated within the National City Terminal, and interchange with the San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad.
Daily L (local series) train between San Diego, Miramar, Escondido, MCB Camp Pendleton wye sidings, and the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
Occasional O (officer or geometry series) and W (work series) trains.
Occasional high priority military trains... The San Diego to Los Angeles railroad route is formally designated by the Department of Defense (DOD) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) as part of the Strategic Rail Corridor Network (STRACNET).
Disclaimers:
1. Follow the direction of railroad crews and law enforcement at all times.
2. Stay off the railroad’s right of way at all times.
3. All video recorded from adjacent sidewalks, parking lot, and grade crossing.
There are many reasons a derailment can occur, including (but not limited to):
Large volume precipitation
Seismic activity
Heat waves (thermal expansion)
Obstructions (including large animals, trees, motor vehicles). Did you know that mule buck deer that populate this area are often over 300 pounds?
We do not know the root cause of this low speed derailment, and there will be no effort on our part to identify it. Comments for this video will remain turned off accordingly. BNSF and port crews are highly trained and accomplished with an outstanding safety record.
