Today, Bangalore is internationally very well known. And it has earned many accolades such as "The IT Capital of India", "Silicon Valley of India", so on and so forth.
But what went into building this pool of talent that we see today?
In this video I am going to explore the reason behind Bangalore's success.
oday, Bangalore is known as the Silicon Valley of India. This status was not achieved in a few years but is the result of a foundation laid down by the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore, Maharaja Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar-IV or Sri Sir Krishnaraja Wodeyar- IV or Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. He was the 24th king of the Mysore Kingdom.
At the time of his death, the Maharaja had a personal fortune of approximately US$400 million making him one of the world’s richest men. Under his reign, Mysore was renowned as the best-administered state in the world.
A number of important institutions were established during his reign and Bangalore took its first steps towards becoming the progressive city that it is today. Karnataka observed his 136th birth anniversary on June 4 2020.
Maharaja Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar-IV – Remarkable Achievements
Hydroelectric power project at Shivanasamudra – In 1902, Mysore became the first state to produce hydroelectric power not only in India but in all Asia
Minto Eye Hospital – This is the world’s oldest eye hospital. It was established during the Maharaja’s reign in 1903.
Street lights in Bangalore – On August 5th, 1905, streetlights were introduced in Bangalore. This made Bangalore the first Asian city with street lights.
Bicameral Assembly – Under Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV’s guidance, Mysore’s Representative Assembly was expanded. In 1907, the assembly became bicameral with the establishment of its legislative council.
Women’s Right to Vote – Long before women in America and other parts of the world were allowed to vote, they were given the right to do so in Mysore.
Vani Vilas Sagar Dam in Chitradurga – The dam was constructed in 1907 was the first dam in Karnataka.

The Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore – In 1911, 371 acres of land and funds were gifted to the Indian Institute of Science to begin running functionally.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited – Though the company came into existence much later, the Maharaja laid its foundation stone in 1940.
Raja Wodeyar, the first prominent ruler of Wodeyar dynasty incurs the curse of rani Alamelamma.
Raja Wodeyar, a ruler known for his valour and aggression, incurs the terrible curse of childlessness
from Alamelamma. This episode we will understand how all the events leading up to this curse
unfolded.
In the previous episode, we shared the story of how Wodeyar dynasty came into being. If you
haven’t watched, I suggest you to watch it, link is given in the description box.
In the year 1399, Yaduraya married chikkadevarasi and laid the foundation for Wodeyar dynasty.
Back then, Wodeyar dynasty was still a small province which was a feudatory to the renowned
Kingdom, Vijayanagar dyanasty. After Yaduraya, there were eight successors to the Wodeyar dynasty
and nothing significant happened during their reign.
Raja Wodeyar was the ninth King in the history of Wodeyar dynasty who took the reins in his hands
and dreamt of expanding the dynasty to greater heights. Raja Wodeyar was born in 1552, to Bola
Chamaraja Wodeyar and his wife Sindhuvalli Veerajammannni. In the year 1578, at the age of 26,
Raja Wodeyar ascended the throne.
It is important to note here that the Vijayanagara empire, to which Wodeyar dynasty was a
feudatory, was in its last phase of existence. In the battle of Talikota, the Deccan Sultanates united in
order to defeat Aliya Rama Raya of Vijayanagar empire. After the battle, Vijayanagar kingdom had
hit its rock bottom. The time was ripe for other kingdoms to surface.
One such kingdom was Wodeyar dynasty heralded by Raja Deva Wodeyar. He conquered places
such as Rangasamudram, Naranalli, Arakere, Sosale, banur, Kannambadi, Narasipura.
