[Ep. 160] The first cycle highway of the world was this 2003 new style bicycle route from the city of Breda to the town of Etten-Leur in the south of the Netherlands. 'Seven kilometers right of way" was how this route was summarized. There is only one traffic light at a high volume junction but on all other junctions the cyclist has indeed priority over all other traffic. The video shows large trucks yielding for kids on a bike, a normality in the Netherlands.
So how is this route used? We see all sorts of people cycling here for all sorts of reasons. We witness a school-run and pass a supermarket. Even though the cycle highway ends at the town's edge the perfect cycling infrastructure continues all the way into the town's center where the many bicycles both riding and parked form a testament of the high bicycle use in every corner of the Netherlands.
