Baker's Cyst: Causes & Treatment Options - Baker's cyst are basically a fluid-filled sac that forms in the hollow space behind your knee joint. Baker's cysts typically develop when your knee produces too much synovial fluid (the lubricating fluid in your joints) secondary to underlying issues including:
• Arthritis (esp osteoarthritis)
• Meniscus tears
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Cartilage injuries
This excess fluid builds up and creates a bulge that can range from the size of a marble to a golf ball or larger. How to recognize a Baker's cyst:
• Swelling behind the knee
• Pain when extending/flexing knee #JointPain
• Stiffness and limited range of motion
• A feeling of tightness behind the knee
• Calf pain or swelling if the cyst ruptures
#BakersCyst Treatment options can include:
1️⃣ Conservative approaches:
• Rest and elevation
• Ice therapy to reduce swelling
• Compression bandages
• Over-the-counter pain relievers
• Physical therapy exercises
2️⃣ Medical interventions:
• Corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation
• Fluid drainage (aspiration) for immediate relief
• Surgery for persistent cysts (if other treatments fail)
3️⃣ Treating the underlying cause:
• Managing #arthritis symptoms
• Physical therapy
• Addressing meniscus tears or other knee injuries
If knee swelling persists for more than a few days and/or is accompanied by fever, or severely limits your mobility, it's time to seek medical attention. Many Baker's cysts resolve on their own or with minimal treatment, but addressing the root cause is essential for preventing recurrence.
