I didn’t really know what to expect from Svalbard.
We visited Longyearbyen in mid-October, just a week before the polar night began - when the days grow short, the light turns blue, and the town slowly prepares for months without sun. It's off season and you really feel the sleepiness.
This film is a small glimpse into life in the Arctic: walking through Longyearbyen, hiking into Bjørndalen, seeing reindeer with their calves, warming up in a sauna, sharing simple food by a fire, and ending our days surrounded by mountains and silence. We did 5 days and even though the city is rather small and you need a guide to go out of it, there is a lot to do. I am just wondering what the summers are like..
Svalbard isn’t loud. It doesn’t try to impress you. But it has a quiet way of staying with you long after you leave. I have this experience from Greenland, too - it truly is special.
Filmed in Longyearbyen, Bjørndalen, Nybyen & Camp Barentz, with my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and my 35mm & 75mm anamorphic mft 1.33x lens from SIRUI.
