Jofumine Shrine: A Historical and Spiritual Overview
Historical Significance and the Legend of Taira no Masakado
Jofumine Shrine, situated at the summit of Mount Jofumine (1,038m) in Saitama Prefecture, serves as a profound site of historical memory and folk religious practice. The shrine is inextricably linked to Taira no Masakado, the 10th-century provincial magnate who led the Johei-Tengyo Rebellion against the central imperial government. Following his defeat in 940 CE, oral tradition asserts that Masakado sought refuge in the karst caves near this summit, establishing a hidden fortification.
The "Kikyo" Taboo and Folklore
The cultural landscape of the shrine is defined by the tragic legend of Princess Kikyo, Masakado’s consort, who is said to have betrayed his location to government forces. This narrative has manifested in a long-standing local taboo: the Kikyo (Chinese Bellflower) is notoriously absent from the mountain’s flora, and pilgrims have historically avoided the flower’s motif to appease the restless spirit of the fallen "New Emperor."
Mountain Asceticism and Architectural Context
Architecturally and spiritually, Jofumine Shrine reflects the traditions of Shugendo (mountain asceticism). Its remote location and the rugged terrain surrounding the Okunoin (inner sanctuary) underscore the shrine’s role as a site for spiritual discipline and topographical veneration. The shrine remains a critical focal point for studying the intersection of historical insurgencies and the sanctification of landscape in the Chichibu region.
