Nuremberg currently has a 7 route, 37km tram network forming part of an integrated public transport system, along with busses (some electric), and U-bahn metro, all using the same zones, fares, and ticketing. DB national railways also provides an S-bahn service. From the 1960s onwards, there was a plan to gradually replace trams with busses and underground U-bahn lines. The result is that areas of the city with U-bahn service do not have tramways, and vice-versa. The numbering of the U-bahn lines is based on the tram routes they replaced. The introduction of modern low-floor trams in the 1990s reversed public opinion and political policy back in favour of trams. Several tram routes form a ¾ circle line around the Altstadt City Wall, but trams do not currently enter the extensive Old Town. The Tram Museum operates seasonal vintage tram tours over this section of track.
Trams are currently refurbished Adtranz Citybahn GT6N and GT8N, plus new design 4-section Siemens Avenio. (There are also eight problematic Stadler Variobahns from 2006, but their fate is unknown.)
The track is 1435mm standard gauge with 600V dc overhead line. About 40% of the network is private light rail, the rest is street running in mixed traffic.
