We need 99,746 segments of concrete for Sydney’s new metro railway tunnels.
This is the story of how they’re made – from the specialised factory to their installation deep underground in the twin 15.5km tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham.
More than 130 people work at the Marrickville factory run by Sydney Metro’s tunnel builders John Holland CPB Ghella, producing one four-tonne segment every six minutes.
Sydney Metro is Australia's biggest public transport project.

Born at Marrickville
One made every 6 minutes
About 280 a day by a team of 120 workers
Each segment weigh 4 tonnes
3.5m long and 1.7m wide
Each segment is designed for a precise location inside a metro tunnel
A state of the art facility delivering 99,746 concrete segments
Stacked on top of each other, they'd stretch 26km into the air
From factory to construction site
Crossing one landmark transport project to get to another
Headed underground in the correct order
Into the mega tunnel boring machine
Six segments make one concrete ring
Installed inside the mega borer as it digs forward
16,451 rings line the tunnels
Leaving a completed tunnel as the mega borer moves ahead
