create a free Minecraft server with Aternos, you must first create an account and then follow the simple steps to set up and start your server. Aternos supports both Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft. 

Step 1: Create an Aternos account

Navigate to the Aternos website at aternos.org.

Click the Play button.

Choose your signup method:

Sign up with Google: Link your account with your Google account.

Standard signup: Click Sign up, choose a username, agree to the terms, set a password, and provide an optional email. 

Step 2: Create your Minecraft server

After signing in, click the Create a server button.

Select the edition of Minecraft you want to play. You will be prompted to choose either Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.

Customize your server by setting a server name and a Message of the Day (MOTD).

Click Create. 

Step 3: Start your server

From your server's dashboard, click the Start button.

You will need to accept the Minecraft End-User License Agreement (EULA) before the server can launch.

Wait for the server to finish starting. You will hear a "ding" and see the status change to "Online".

Note: Your Aternos server will shut down automatically if no one is playing to conserve resources. You will receive a countdown notice before it goes offline. 

Step 4: Join your server

Open your Minecraft game client.

Copy your server's address from the Aternos dashboard.

On the Minecraft main menu, go to Multiplayer and click Add Server or Direct Connect.

Paste the server address and click Done or Join Server.

Your server will appear in your list, and you can now join and play. 

Customize your server

Aternos offers many options for customizing your server for free. 

Change software: You can switch between different server software, such as Vanilla, PaperMC, or Fabric, to allow for plugins or mods.

Manage players: Add players to a whitelist to restrict access or give players operator (OP) status to grant them admin privileges.

Backup worlds: Aternos allows you to back up and restore your worlds. Keep in mind that free servers have a 4GB storage limit.

Change settings: You can adjust server options like the game difficulty, player slots, and whether PVP is enabled.
