Winsor & Newton and C. Roberson & Co were, and remain, two key players in the fusion of art, science and technology that goes into the creation of artist supplies.
Archives from the two companies are housed at our Conservation department, the Hamilton Kerr Institute, and are part of our collection. They contain a huge range of pigments, paints, correspondence and records that chart the evolution of colour and artists' materials from the 1800s to the early 1900s. The archives are currently being digitised, and have a wealth of information about the behind-the-scenes work that helped artists like John Singer Sargent, John Everett Millais and Walter Sickert to push boundaries.
